The Apple in Canada’s iPhone

This little device has caused a long wait for Canadians

Today was the big day for Canadians and Apple’s iPhone.  For over a year, we’ve waited for iPhones to be available, and, even though it’s still surrounded by a lot of controversy, the time has come.

The uproar was that Rogers Wireless, the largest Canadian service provider, and the only authorized Canadian carrier of the Apple iPhone, planned to charge exceedingly high rates, and lock buyers into long service contracts.  Many people felt this was unfair, and protests and petitions were flying.

At the end, Rogers gave in somewhat, and the 3 year contract rates were dropped to $30/month, or less than a third of the original proposed pricing.  This came as a relief to many,Long waits for some mean uncomfortable sleeping arrangementsbut it may not have come soon enough for the tastes of consumers.  With limited crowds of anxious shoppers lining the sidewalks, most locations had less than 100 people queued for the latest in techno-gadgets.  But even those less than record-breaking numbers were enough to quickly exhaust the limited stocks available.  Before noon, most stores had sold of their stock on hand, and were issuing numbered tickets to those who had stood in line only to have the products sell out.

Only time will tell how the situation finally works out, but at least for now there are a lot of happy Canadian iPhone owners, and lot more happily awaiting the future delivery their newly purchased prize cell phones.

Panasonic Toughbook U1 Ultra is perfectly viewable under sunlight

Are you a real klutz that you have dropped your netbook or notebook for more times than you care to remember? If that is the case, then you might want to check out a more durable device which can withstand such punishment – we’re talking about the Panasonic Toughbook U1 Ultra. What makes Panasonic’s offering so different from the rest? Well, it not only delivers improved sunlight visibility, it also runs off Windows 7 and boasts some pretty decent performance figures for a device in its cass. For its display, the Toughbook U1 Ultra is equipped with a Transflective Plus display for up to 6000 nit viewability in direct sunlight, while being accompanied by a 64GB solid state drive, 2GB RAM, an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz processor and Windows 7 as the operating system of choice. It’s target market? Those who are involved in highly mobile jobs including direct store delivery (DSD), eCitation and vegetation management in markets like supply chain management, public safety and utilities.
Of course, you can also throw in an optional 2-megapixel camera if that is your cup of tea, to hold video conferences and calls with your office mates while you’re on the go. This camera will come with updated software that delivers faster auto focus as well as improved white balancing. Other optional items you can jazz up the U1 Ultra with would be a barcode reader. In terms of usability and navigation enhancements, those will include enlarged screen icons, programmable “right click” onscreen button, a larger soft keyboard, a “zoom and pan” mode that enables users to simply navigate robust content and a soft “Ctrl-Alt-Del” button for log-on access.
Just how tough of a cookie is the Toughbook U1 Ultra? Well, it has been certified by an independent third-party test lab to meet MIL-STD-810G and IP65 standards for environmental conditions. The device itself is full well capable of shrugging off a drop of 6 feet from any angle, while there is a method to its fanless design with the aim of keeping out water and dust while reducing weight and reducing a common point of failure. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and optional Gobi2000 mobile broadband technology from Qualcomm. Pricing starts from $2,799 upwards, making it tough on your bank account as well.

Smart Book is more than the sum of its parts

I think many of us suffer from gadget-itis, a case where we have way too many mobile devices. The primary symptom is having too much digital content spread out over a laptop, tablet, and mobile phone.
Often, none of these devices are synced, so it is difficult to find what file we need at the right time. Fortunately, this Smart Book hopes to end that.
I have a video after the jump of a man showing how it works. The notebook has a detachable screen that can be used as a tablet, and the tablet has a detachable mobile device that can be used as a phone.
It certainly isn’t like anything I have ever seen before, especially with its slot that stores a 2GB USB dongle. That alone could sell me. If all of these parts add up to a greater whole and sync together easily, then I am totally sold.
As for internal specs, this has an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU with 512MB of RAM. As for storage, it has 256MB of NAND flash and an 8GB microSD card of storage. It also has 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and could have an OS of Ubuntu, Android, and possibly  OS.
Smart Book isn’t ready for shipping as yet, but pre-orders can be taken at $549 for the whole thing and $199 per individual component. If you ask me, a multifaceted device like this could be the way of the mobile future.

International iPhone 4 Launch Expands with Israel, Malaysia, Philippines (Unconfirmed)

Apple is on track to deploy the latest version of its iPhone in several new Asian territories,China being the first, according to an official statement issued by the company yesterday.

In the meanwhile, Cupertino is planning to send iPhone 4 shipments to at least three additional territories: Malaysia, and The Philippines, as well as Israel, according to a report by 9to5mac, which learned of these upcoming launches from an unspecified source.

The site claims to have been tipped off that “Apple has some more international iPhone 4 launches up it its sleeve.” In this respect, “the iPhone 4 should be launching in both Israel and Malaysia next weekend and presumably a few other countries,” the leakers allegedly told the site.

Initially, there was little information regarding the Israeli launch, but the site managed to scrape together more details related to the Malaysian launch.

According to the report, both the iPhone 4 and the 8 GB iPhone 3GS are launching in Malaysia this upcoming Thursday, September 23rd.

Carriers will include both Maxis and DiGi, the source reportedly said.

An update to the same report comes with new information regarding the iPhone 4 launch in Israel, as well as in The Philippines, and Turkey.

According to the new tip, “Israel will be getting the iPhone 4 on September 24th on Orange, The Philippines will get the iPhone 4 on September 26th for Globe Telecoms, and Turkey will be getting the iPhone 4 on Turkcell & Vodafone Turkey on September 24th.”

We’ll be keeping an eye out on Apple’s PR section to confirm whether or not this leak is accurate.

However, it is reasonable to assume that, with this many territories scheduled to receive iPhone 4 shipments, Apple would have confirmed at least one of them, in addition to China.

Maxis and DiGi start selling iPhone 4 in M'sia

PETALING JAYA: DiGi.Com Bhd and Maxis Bhd will begin selling iPhone 4 from today, with DiGi.Com expecting encouraging iPhone 4 sales based on the 30,000 inquiries received prior to its launch in Malaysia.
“We are thrilled to bring iPhone 4 to our customers where Malaysians are fast becoming regular users of mobile Internet,” said DiGi head of marketing Albern Murty.
“Now, with the phone already available in the market, we expect to see strong uptrend,” told reporters after the launching of iPhone 4 monthly commitment packages yesterday.
Maxis Bhd chief executive officer Sandip Das (left) presenting the first iPhone 4 to the first owner from Maxis immediately after the launch of the latest iPhone on Thursday.
“All the buzz of the iPhone 4 on many social media sites may also help to promote it,” Murty added.
In a separate event early this morning, Maxis held a grand ceremony to launch the much anticipated iPhone 4 at midnight.
Maxis chief operating officer Jean-Pascal van Overbeke said the company strove to bring the latest technology to its customers.
Launch of Iphone 4 on Thursday by Digi. On the right is Renee Gan and left Eloise Low.

“Over the past 12 months, Maxis has more than doubled the data-carrying capacity of its mobile network, ensuring a truly optimised iPhone 4 experience with better speed and coverage.”
To date, mobile Internet users registered with DiGi stands at 2.8 millions.
On the iPhone 4 antenna-attenuation issue, Murty said Apple had addressed the problem and DiGi did not expect it to dampen the demand of the phones.
The newly launched iconic phone from Apple Inc features FaceTime for video calling and new retina display – the highest resolution display ever built into a phone – resulting in super crisp text, images and video.
The iPhone 4 also features a five-megapixel camera with LED flash, high-definition video recording and up to 40% longer talk time.
It also comes with iOS 4, the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system.

Casio EXILIM EX-H20G Hybrid GPS Digital Camera

Casio scores another world’s first with the EXILIM EX-H20G Hybrid GPS digital camera, making it the ideal traveling companion. Why do we say so? Well, the integrated Hybrid GPS system will deliver ultra-precise location data for the geotagging of photos and videos. Sounds normal, but you would be stoked to know that this is also the first camera that is able to geotag indoors. Yup, we’ve said it – you can even go into your home without missing a beat, snapping away happily while having those images tagged. Apart from that, you can also view your location on the camera itself thanks to a pre-loaded map on the EX-H20G.
Geotagging has certainly been made all the more popular these days thanks to the introduction of photo-sharing Web sites, and consumers do take the effort and time to do more with their images. The Casio Exilim EX-H20G intends to take the geotagging experience to a new level, whereby it will incorporate exciting technologies to make the entire process fun, easy and completely seamless. How does it work indoors, you ask? Well, that is why it was dubbed the “Hybrid GPS system”, merging GPS with autonomic positioning, where it is made possible thanks to an internal motion sensor. This allows the EX-H20G to track a user’s last known satellite-acquired position against map data stored in the camera’s internal memory, no matter if you are indoors or not. Not only that, the camera itself comes pre-loaded with information regarding 10,000 sightseeing photo spots worldside, and each time you are within range of one of these photo spots, the EX-H20G will automatically alert you, letting you know that you’re standing on the site of a point-of-interest.
This might just change the way you snap photos as you will probably want to make full use of the Hybrid GPS system, changing the way you travel and plan your holidays. We wonder whether this consumer level feature will ever make its way to the DSLR market, or would DSLRs remain within the realm of serious folk who do not want something like a GPS system interfere with its final results? Only time will tell, but we know that this 14.1-megapixel shooter will hit the market later this November for $349.95.

Movie Theater Bus

In the late 1960’s, the UK’s Ministry of Technology was commissioned to make seven vans that could be a movietheater.

Apparently, there was very little movie watching done on these things, as these vans sat around in disrepair for years. However, this one has been “painstakingly restored and outfitted with an all new theater system”.

There is a full inventory of what equipment it actually has at my Source link. One of them is an Epson EH-TW3500 LCD projector.

Now, if only all buses have a movie theater on them. Man, I would gladly have taken the bus to school if I knew there was a movie on it.

Of course, my bus didn’t take two hours to get to school, so we couldn’t watch a full movie or anything. Knowing my luck, they would have probably shown those short educational films that looked old back when I was young. The sound wasn’t dependable on those reel-to-reel jobs.

Still, perhaps there should be movies on every Greyhound bus for those real long trips. Of course, I can see a lot of people that would mind having a movie theater on their bus.

Also, what if the movie theater bus had an accident? It would be weird to watch the end of Avatar only to find that the bus has rolled over. That’s a little too much realism.

How to Choose the Right Monitor

Buying the right monitor is very simple if you know exactly what you want and what your primary use will be. Walking into a shop and asking the guy at the counter what's good spells disaster, especially when shopping for computer components. More often than not you'll end up with some mediocre product that the shop guy has been trying to get rid off from his inventory. Many people don't pay much attention to the type of monitor they buy, the only thing they concentrate on is the size, which in a way is a good place to start, but you can't just leave it there. You need to dig a bit deeper.

Instead of just explaining what the specifications mean, we will create different categories depending on different usage patterns and highlight the things you should keep an eye out for and things you should ignore. In fact, there are a couple of specifications that can be overlooked for any category like Dynamic Contrast ratio. This is one specification that manufactures love to increase exponentially with every new model they release, but in reality it doesn't mean anything.

As a matter of fact, DC would more often than not ruin the image rather than improve it. Imagine you're watching a movie and there's a night scene playing, with DC the entire screen will darken so much that you can barely see anything. Also, the transition from dark to bright is mostly never smooth or natural which looks odd and would give you a headache. The second one is response time. There was a time when monitors used to have high response time and checking this was crucial, especially for gaming and movies. Nowadays, almost any monitor you buy whether 4K or 40K will have a response time of under 8ms, which is ideally considered the sweet spot for ghost-free videos.

5 Apps I want on the Samsung Bada App Store

The Samsung Wave S8500 is one helluva phone, isn't it? With a spectacular spec sheet and equally satisfying performance in real life, especially in the multi-media department, the Wave leaves very few things to be desired for people who seek a true convergence device. Samsung's Bada OS, which was designed in-house, was looked upon with incertitude by cellphone enthusiasts, as they wondered how it will stand against strong contenders like Google Android or even Apple's iOS. But now we know that it is more than just fairly usable.

.

The Bada OS's app store wasn't well-populated with popular apps that we love when we tested the Wave. It has been over three months since its release and we are yet to see some of those apps trickle down to this platform. If app makers were waiting to see how the platform has proliferated, the news of Samsung Wave crossing 1 million in sales in just the first month seems to be good enough proof.

From our wish-list, there are five apps that we desperately need on the Bada platform. Once these apps make it to the store, there is no reason why one should not buy the Samsung Wave. Following are those five apps:

Facebook Slams Smartphone Development Rumors

Facebook has refuted all rumors regarding the company building a mobile device based on Google's Android mobile operating system.

All this started after TechCrunch reported that the social network website Facebook is working on a secret project. The report stated that Facebook wanted to create a deeper integration into the contacts list and other core functions of a mobile OS which requires controlling the entire OS itself.

TechCrunch reported that Facebook was seriously looking to build a smartphone or a mobile operating system based on Google's Android. Business Insider had also reported that Facebook is working on Android based mobile OS, citing a plugged Silicon Valley Source. Apart from that, the company was also said to be working on adding full support of Connect feature in mobile operating systems.

Facebook Slams Smartphone Development Rumors

Facebook says it is not working on developing an Android based mobile operating system

Regarding these reports, Facebook spokesperson Jaime Schopflin sent out the following statement:

"The story, which originated in Techcrunch, is not accurate. Facebook is not building a phone. Our approach has always been to make phones and apps more social. Current projects include everything from an HTML5 version of the site to apps on major platforms to full Connect support with SDKs to deeper integrations with some manufacturers.  Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this. For an example, check out Connect for iPhone and the integration we have with contact syncing through our iPhone app.  Another example is the INQ1 phone with Facebook integration (the first so-called 'Facebook Phone'). The people mentioned in the story are working on these projects. The bottom line is that whenever we work on a deep integration, people want to call it a 'Facebook Phone' because that's such an attractive soundbite, but building phones is just not what we do."

We're all aware of the security issues, koobface worms, phishing scams and other holes in Facebook. Irrespective of that, the number of Facebook users on the mobile platform continue to grow over a period of time. We suppose Facebook should stick to what it really is - a social network, rather than try to be a native function controlling app for smartphones.

Best Touchscreen Phones - What's your budget?

Best Touchscreen Phones

These days it's a fad to own a touchscreen phone. Gone are the days when a touchscreen phone was meant for a businessman or for those who wanted to throw an "I'm-so-sophisticated" attitude. Earlier these phones came with a high price tag but have now turned affordable. So even if you have a tight budget you can still manage to get yourself a touchscreen phone.

However, there are a few things you should know about touchscreen phones before you buy one. Touchscreen phones are fun to work with as it incorporates one of our senses. But the chances of this excitement wearing off eventually are high. Touchscreen phones have a large screen that's good for viewing, but then it gets smudgy quickly.

Now since touch operated phones do not have keypads, it gets confusing and tedious when you do not have any sense of where you are tapping the screen without looking. So typing a message without looking at the screen is history. Large screens mean a free fall of the phone could spell disaster; you got to be more careful with it than standard phones.

Nonetheless, here are the best touchscreen phone options under different budgets if you plan to go for one.

Price: Rs. 9,500

Samsung has gone crazy releasing several phones after showcasing them at the Mobile World Congress. Among the new releases were the Star phones. There are two Star phones; Star 3G and Star. The Star was aimed to kill the market that the LG Cookie opened up. Going head-on against the Cookie, the Samsung Star turned out to be a winner. The phone is much better and so is the interface. If you are looking to buy a touch phone with a limited budget of 10K I would suggest the Samsung Star over the LG Cookie. The experience on the Star is way better than on the Cookie. I rate the Star as a much better phone, even over its sibling the Star 3G, which is priced close to 12K. Right now this is the best budget touchscreen phone that is available even though it has got a few shortcomings.

If on a tighter budget, I suggest you have a look at the Ray T65. It's available for 6.5K and is pretty impressive.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 came and left our labs a few months ago failing to win our hearts. It was a decent phone, but a couple of flaws couldn't be overlooked. Plus, now with quality competition the game has become even tougher. For those who feel the X10 felt like a slab in the pocket, Sony Ericsson offers you variety with the X10 Mini.

When I first set eye on this phone, I exclaimed "Oh my god, they really meant it by calling it the Mini!". This cute little phone has the internals of an HTC Legend with certain compromises that allowed SE to cram it into a shell this small. So is this a classic case of form over function? Or has Sony Ericsson managed to maintain a fine balance. Read on to uncover the truth.

Design and Build

The big brother X10 was quite a handful with that humongous 4-inch screen. The X10 Mini on the other hand is really tiny in comparison. It reminded me of that tiny Bipasha Basu branded Panasonic A100 from ancient times. The phone easily fits in the palm, and the pointy edges of the X10 have been curved off in the X10 Mini, providing a better feel. At under 90 grams, the phone packs in so much inside as is still quite light. The build quality is pretty good. With limited space to play with, SE withdrew the privilege of a removable battery in the X10 Mini; just like the iPhone. As a consolation, you can change the back cover and you get a variety of colors to choose from. They've even thrown in a few in the package itself, so you can start matching the phone to your daily apparel from day one.

The screen is much smaller at 2.55 inches, which is even smaller than your typical 2.8-inch Samsung Corby. Fortunately, being of capacitive nature, the finger response is pretty good. The swift UI also deserves appreciation, but more on that later. My initial skepticism about usability of a touchscreen this small was completely washed away. But it sports a QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) resolution which in comparison to today's HVGA (320 x 480) phones feels pale. It also could be because of the 65K color limitation of Android 1.6 that's making it look that way. The brightness also isn't too satisfying; we preferred keeping it at max. For a touchscreen, the real estate felt a little too small to browse full-fledged websites. But it is fine to act as a viewfinder to the camera at the back. All in all, it's a responsive screen but not as crisp and readable as bigger Android phones.

Six Ways of Preventing Electrical Shock

This is a sensible look at preventing electrical shock. These tips will help keep you safe.

1. Be Safety Conscious
Working with electrical circuits can be dangerous if you don’t take certain safety precautions. Electrical shock can not only injure you but also kill you. Practice safety when working on any circuit and slow down! When you hurry through a project, there is a greater chance for an accident to occur.

2. Shut the Power Off
Always shut off the power to a circuit or device that you will be working on. This is the first thing you should do before working on any electrical circuit. I don’t know anyone who has been shocked by a circuit that is not energized.

3. Test the Circuit
After turning a circuit off, it's a good idea to check it with a tester to be sure that, indeed, it is off. Never assume that the circuit is off!

4. Ladders
Ladders are necessary to accomplish some electrical jobs. Never use an aluminum ladder on any electrical project. Always use an insulated fiberglass ladder to keep you safe.

5. Wet Locations
Avoid wet areas when working with or on anything electrical. If there is a reason that you have to be in that situation, wear rubber boots and gloves to lesson your chance of getting shocked. Tools and appliances should be plugged into a GFCI outlet or GFCI extension cord.

Don't forget to dry your hands before grabbing any cord to plug it in or unplug it. Wet hands and a frayed cord don't mix. You reach down to grab the cord and just like that, you've been shocked! Believe it or not, it happens.

6. Warning Labels
Finally, if you are working on the service panel or a circuit, be sure to place a warning label on the face of the panel. This will warn someone not to turn on the circuit that you are working on. There’s nothing worse than turning off the power, checking that it’s off and starting to work on the circuit, only to have someone come behind you and turn the circuit back on. Always think and ask questions before turning on a breaker that is shut off. Maybe someone is working on the other end.
