Astro, the Malaysian pay TV operator owned by MEASAT, has announced that its latest broadcast services will utilize HD MPEG-4 set top boxes with local recording capability from Technicolor to continue its transition to high definition direct to home broadcasting. Under the agreement, Technicolor will provide Astro with locally based support, both while the STBs are delivered and following their sale to customers. Astro customers can now enjoy more HD enabled external disk drive recording features: “We are happy to be working with Technicolor and we are confident that their expertise in innovative high definition services will be a great support for us in our HD offering to our customers,” said Rohana Rozhan, CEO of Astro.
Astro has been broadcasting to Malaysia and Brunei since 1996 and serves around 3 million subscribers with DTH satellite offering and mobile video streaming services. The operator launched its HD TV service B.yond in December 2009 and currently provides eight HD Channels. This June it launched the first of its HD-enabled personal video recorders, with rewind and ‘live pause’ features, as well as the ability to watch two live programmes at once. Video-on-demand and IPTV are expected by the end of the year
